I had lunch the other day at Barcelona and I’m ashamed to admit I hadn’t been there before that lunch. As I’m sure most of you already know, it’s fabulous. That experience and a recent article in Yahoo Finance which like so many lately, says Columbus is a great place to live and work (number 4 in fact). It cited the arts community, COSI, the University, jobs in high-tech, agriculture and chemical industries and the cost of living as some of the major drawing cards. I’m so glad they got the arts thing right. We have great local arts scene including ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, a nationally noticed and locally loved favorite of mine.
I’m sorry they left off our restaurant scene altogether! As a former constant traveler to other cities, I have come to really appreciate the quality and uniqueness of the restaurants here in Columbus. I would stack them up against ANY other city’s offerings.
In addition to Barcelona, my favorites include the Polaris Grille, The Refectory and Eddie Merlot’s. Part of what appeals to me about any restaurant that would make my list has to be the staff. The food has to be great, but the staff and the way they greet you by name and treat you like family in each of these restaurants helps to make the experience outstanding. I’m always telling my wife, Trel, I don’t want to eat anywhere they don’t know my name when I walk in.
Also a good bet, and I admit it means breaking that last rule, are any of the dine originals restaurants in Columbus. These range from the very affordable to the very top end. The one thing they all have in common is they are a good bet to try something new, when you’re in the mood for new.
